'Of Walking in Ice' by Werner Herzog

Herzog on Herzog:
'I actually like the book more than my films:
it is closer to my heart than all my films together'.

A train journey, a rural walk to a village hall, lunch, a short early documentary film by Werner Herzog (Aguirre Wrath Of God, Fizcarraldo, The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser) then a performance of his edited book describing a four-week winter hike from Munich to Paris in 1974.

'When a friend told me Lotte Eisner had suffered a stroke I made this decision, not to fly to see her. Because I just could not accept that she might die, I walked from Munich to her apartment in Paris . I grabbed a bundle of clothes, a map, a compass and set off in a straight line, sleeping under bridges, in farms and abandoned houses. I walked against her death, knowing that if I walked on foot she would be alive when I got there'.
