Project work with 1st Framework, 3rd Thought (50+Theatre Group) with the Social Work team at London South Bank University.
Background
London South Bank University is a large provider of education in Health and Social Care and provides a number of qualifying and post-qualifying courses in social work. Students following degrees and higher degrees in social work need to be equipped with the right knowledge and skills and attitudes to work with Older People in their organisations. This is needed in order to maximise the potential of Service Users and their Carers and to help positively promote their independence. Our students and stakeholders are from a very diverse background and we believe in promoting positive images of all the people we work with in the community which means challenging stereotypes and discrimination and oppression in all the work that we do.
A group of staff from the Social Work Team have been working with a small group of Service Users over the last year to try to develop more innovative teaching and learning materials which in turn utilise the Arts as a means of enhancing and deepening the student learning experience. Within this overall project, the project team have commissioned 1st Framework to produce a tailor made series of short films. The films will be made by an intergenerational team of students, professionals and older people. It is envisaged that these clips will be used across a number of courses in the Faculty of Health and Social Care within teaching programmes concerned with promoting the care and support needs of Older People using care services.
It is envisaged that we will be able to produce these clips in the form of a DVD as well as through various websites.
LSBU & 1st Framework want to ensure that as many people as possible benefit from the product in the spirit of a joint enterprise.
Specification
The exact topic for the films has been left very broad. We would however like to look for opportunities to make this an inclusive exercise by building on any outcomes of some initial experiential workshops with social work students and service users. LSBU like hosted these workshops in order to provide opportunities for 1st Framework and our own stakeholders to share and pool ideas with the production team. The final product of any work between the different stakeholders will ultimately find ways of confronting common prejudice and oppression against older people in health and social care.
