What

An innovative event during 2001 International Year of the Volunteer to celebrate Adult Learners Week - English National Opera's Baylis Programme North Southwark residency, funded by the Pool of London Partnership and arts organisation 1st Framework mark Adult Learners Week with a visit by a touring community cabaret performance of The Threepenny Opera. This is the world premiere of the new edition just released by the Kurt Weill Foundation containing music linking scenes by KURT WEILL, not previously published.

The cabaret will complete its tour in Berlin's famous film studios UFA where over 90 years ago G.W. Pabst made the original film recording of Brecht's production. The studios were famous for producing many of the German film classics of the twenties including Pandora's Box, 'M' and The Blue Angel.

Who
The project, made in collaboration with North Southwark arts organisation 1st Framework provides employment for 14 young people and performing experience for 22 older learners. Performances of this unusual community cabaret have already taken place in a number of London locations including the vast underground vaults of Bishopsgate Goods Yard. Director Peter Avery says " the enthusiasm for this event arose from two intergenerational pilot projects we made last year - a translation of Brecht's rehearsals for Caucasian Chalk Circle and another site specific project using dance. Very high quality work can be achieved by bringing professional artists and intergenerational teams together it certainly increases the quantity and quality of arts in areas where there is little provision." Professor Alan Read, Director of Talks at the Institute of Contemporary Arts " Recent projects by 1st Framework have succeeded in challenging a lot of historical stereotypes around arts and older people. Their method of bringing generations together to create new work has inspired many to lay claim to their futures in diverse and creative ways ".

Why?
The Baylis Programme, ENO's Education, Community and Outreach Team encourages participation in the arts across generations and aims to celebrate voluntary arts during International Year of The Volunteer, celebrate informal Lifelong Learning during National Adult Learners Week, provide work experience in creative industries and to increase the quantity and quality of voluntary arts practice in London.
